Periodontitis, also known as pyorrhea, is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium — the tissues that support and surround the tooth.

Treatment of periodontitis requires cleaning and polishing of the root surface. Supragingival and subgingival plaque and cementum layers containing superficial endotoxins must be completely cleaned. This is a prerequisite for regeneration of periodontal tissue.
